Junior Artspreneur Literary Alliance

The Columbia Writers Alliance is leaning toward a Nonprofit Leadership sophisticated pilot layer of 14 middle school students, of which 7 will be chosen to be a youth writers/arts program in 2027. The group will hereinafter be named the Junior Artspreneur Literary Alliance.  By training these 7 "Junior Fellows" to launch projects under the CWA umbrella, we are essentially building a youth-led "franchise" model for our organization.

Junior Artspreneur Literary Alliance "Founding Seven" Leadership Pilot

Date: June 2026

Primary Goal: To train 7 middle schoolers (ages 10–15) to operate as nonprofit junior directors capable of managing independent creative projects and digital publications.

  • The June 2026 pilot will move beyond artistic production to focus on Institutional Leadership. The 14 students initially invited will be narrowed down to a "Founding Seven" cohort. These students will learn:

  • How to lead a creative team and project under the CWA label.

  • Designing and managing a youth-led magazine (mirroring the CWA Vibes model).

  • Understanding "Honorariums," "Royalties," and how to fundraise for their specific "Artspreneur" project.

    • Week 1: The Artspreneur Core. Mastery of the "Product Path"—transforming writing and digital art into sellable media assets.

    • Week 2: The Junior Director Series. Workshops on the "Business of the Issue," including sponsorship acquisition, staff role delegation, and nonprofit ethics.

Junior Artspreneurs: Selection Rubric

To be used during the application and interview process to select the final 7 Fellows.

In selecting the Founding Seven from our group of 14 pilot participants, we are proposing this rubric that will balance creative talent with the maturity required for nonprofit leadership. Since these students will eventually manage their own projects and magazines under the CWA label, this rubric focuses heavily on "Director-level" potential.

High comfort level with Procreate, Canva, or digital layout; eager to master professional tools.

Developing (2 pts)

Strong in one area (writing or art) but needs guidance on how to merge them into a single "product".

Interested in the "Junior Fellow" title, but focused mostly on their own personal portfolio rather than leading others.

Has a product idea but is unsure how to brand it or why someone would want to buy it.

Familiar with basic apps but needs significant training to reach professional "Vibes Magazine" standards.

Can talk about their art with peers, but becomes shy or unclear when presenting to a professional audience.

Emerging (1 pt)

Beginner level in both; treats writing and art as separate, unrelated hobbies.

Prefers to work alone; shows little interest in the "Alliance" or mentorship aspects of the program.

Creative but lacks a "business" mindset; does not see the value in the "Product Path".

Limited experience with technology; prefers traditional paper/pencil only, with no interest in digital media.

Struggles to explain the "why" behind their work; uncomfortable with public interaction or "The Pitch".

Interview Notes & "Sub-Label" Potential

  • Proposed Project Name: __________________________________________________

  • Specific Leadership Role Fit: (e.g., Creative Director, Lead Columnist, Ad Designer)

  • Observer Comments:

Focus on how this student handled the "Work-Based Learning" tasks during the first week of the pilot. Do they take initiative, or do they wait for instructions?

Scoring Guide

  • 13–15 Points: Founding Seven Candidate. Exhibits the "Mogul" mindset and is ready to lead a sub-label or magazine immediately.

  • 9–12 Points: High-Level Participant. Excellent creative contributor; may need a "Junior Editor" role before stepping into a Director position.

  • 5–8 Points: Emerging Artist. Needs more time in the "Creative Lab" phase before taking on nonprofit leadership responsibilities.

To successfully merge storytelling with visual art under the new Junior Artspreneur Literary Alliance (JALA) banner, the program's focus shifts to the Productization of Storytelling. This ensures that writing is not just an isolated craft but the foundation for commercial creative products.

Below is the refined vision and application for the June 2026 pilot.

Welcome Letter: The Path to the Founding Seven

Dear [Student Name],

Congratulations! Out of a highly competitive pool of applicants, you have been selected as one of the 14 Junior Fellows for the Junior Artspreneur Literary Alliance (JALA) June 2026 Leadership Pilot.

You were chosen because we see a spark in your work—a blend of storytelling and visual art that Columbia needs. For the next two weeks, you are entering a professional laboratory. You will be given the tools, the tech, and the mentorship to turn your ideas into a real business.

The Journey to the Founding Seven:

During this pilot, we are looking for more than just great artists; we are looking for Directors. At the end of these two weeks, seven of you will be chosen as our Permanent Founding Directors. These seven will be the "Founding Seven" who will launch their own sub-labels and magazines under CWA in 2027.

Whether you are in the final seven or the founding fourteen, you are now a part of the CWA legacy. You are no longer just a student; you are an Artspreneur.

Welcome to the Alliance. Let’s build something legendary.
